Stretham Old Engine

Stretham Old Engine is a steam-powered engine just south of Stretham in Cambridgeshire, England, that was used to pump water from flood-affected areas of The Fens back into the River Great Ouse. It is one of only three surviving drainage engines in East Anglia, and is a Grade II* listed building.

I'm happy that you had a good look!!
I believe that it can be used for demonstration, but not used for real purpose.
Best Wishes, and keep safe!!

Delightful scene. And thanks for the information about the building - one would not know just by looking at it.

I am pleased you found it interesting. Strange co incidence do happen!
I had a quick look and found a web site giving the history of canals, although there must be many more.. www.canalholidays.co.uk/canal-holidays/history-of-the-canals
And yes, I have been on a narrow boat from Llangollen , and over Pontcysyllte viaduct, ( www.ipernity.com/doc/2247998/45592756 ) on a few occasions.
You will find quite a few narrow boat pictures around my gallery (eg www.ipernity.com/doc/2247998/49278544 ) but I don't have an album for them yet.
Best Wishes, and keep safe!!

The boats are exactly the same size, regardless of purpose, but in this case they are pleasure boats. Essentially houseboats which are only lived in at the weekend by people who enjoy sailing the canals in them. River cruises are still prohibited due to the virus regulations.
Best Wishes, a good weekend, and keep safe!!
Peter
I sometimes was dreaming of a travel on such a narrow boat, somewhere along the numerous canals in your country. But I believe it will continue to be just a dream ;-)
