This is an area of First World War history that is not well-known. There were soldiers working in the Pacific Northwest, helping get the spruce logged and processed to make airplanes, primarily in 1918.

The history of animal management during WW I is quite interesting. Many horses and mules were killed early in the fighting, which prevented the French from being able to grow sufficient food. So the U. S. sent over vast numbers of animals to France, not only for military use, but to help the French farmers. This all required a huge infrastructure, including special ships to carry the animals over.

I have a postcard from a U. S. training camp, with the return address of a "farrier". The man who could shoe all those animals was very valuable.
