Von 1937 - 1945 waren hier 250.000 Menschen aus über 50 Nationen inhaftiert. 56.000 Gefangene kamen in Buchenwald und seinen insgesamt 136 Außenlagern ums Leben.

Die seinerzeit für das LIFE-Magazin tätige Fotoreporterin Margaret Bourke-White dokumentierte als Kriegsberichterstatterin der US-Armee fotografisch auch die Befreiung des Konzentrationslagers Buchenwald.
