These images are the result of a very long day trip to the Pisgah National Forest and the Blue Ridge Parkway in western North Carolina. I was joined by Walter Ezell and Steve Baker, a friend from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan.
We found four orchid species (three of them in bloom) and a number of blooming Trillium species and hybrids, as well as some other very colorful Spring wildflowers. A great day for botanizing, indeed!

This morning, I made a trip to one of my favorite state Heritage Preserves in the upstate of South Carolina to catch the beginning of the Cypripedium acaule or Pink Lady's-slipper orchid bloom. I was not disappointed. They should be good for another week to ten days -- lots of plants still in bud. I then proceeded to Nine Tiimes Preserve for some other delights.
