Independent Flixx – Denman Street between Barclay and Nelson, Vancouver, British Columbia

At the end of July, 2011, Independent Flixx on Denman Street closed after 12 years in business. With its colourful storefront and interior, the West End store was something of neighbourhood icon. A staple in the eccentric seam of the West End, this was the place to find independent movies, cult specialties, European and other foreign films, documentaries, erotica, and movies with a gay and lesbian focus – not surprising, given the demographics of Vancouver’s West End. The hand-lettered sign on the door said it all: "Times Have Changed and Netflixx Sux. It’s Just Too Difficult to Make an Honest Buck!"
