Headhunter harvest

Old skulls taken by warriors in Borneo. Though long illegal, it was once the mark of manhood to hunt down someone of an enemy tribe, and bring the head home to the clan longhouse. Once there they were hung over the fire in the chief meeting hut, and smoked over the centuries. These are kept in a modern longhouse, but are from the distant past.

One of the formative experiences of my childhood was watching people at St. Joseph's Oratory in Montreal line up to touch a casket containing Brother (now St.) André's heart. That's the recent past, too. For all I know they're still doing it.
