Another look at Lyme House

10 Mar 2025 5 9 19
A side-on look at this very pleasing stately home. The house dates from the latter part of the 16th century. Unlike many great estates, Lyme was a much-loved home to generations of one family and their valued and loyal workers. Living through England's most troubled times, the Legh family hung on to their home and (mostly) their heads, and this impact can still be seen across the estate today. The largest estate in Cheshire, Lyme has been designed on a grand scale over a number of centuries. It has been a place to receive occasional royal guests, take friends hunting or to entertain on a lavish scale. Enjoy full screen

HWW ~ Pöstlingberg Zwerg

Seen near the Grottenbahn on the hill of Pöstlingberg, Linz. Its actually a pointer to the nearby children's attraction grotto, presumably maned by these folk. Enjoy the day.

HBM~ from Penrhyn Castle

13 Apr 2025 17 28 41
A spring visit to this wonderful castle on the outskirts of the Welsh town of Bangor brings us to a few benches. The castle estate was founded in the 15th century but this castle was built in the early 19th century by the Pennant family. Now a National Trust property for our delight and exploration. HBM, have a good day.

Easter greetings from Lladdwyn Island

12 Apr 2025 10 16 36
A special scene here from this wonderful Welsh Island showing the old lighthouse and the plain memorial cross. The inscription reads: “Dwynwen“; “in the sixtieth year of Queen Victoria 1897“; “in memory of St Dwynwen Jan 25th 1465“; and, “erected by the Hon F G Wynn owner of the isle“. This is about 6mtrs high. There is in fact another cross nearby too, that one being a Celtic memorial. Best full screen.

Waiting for walkies

A charming study of this dog here, sat on a soft chair designed for the occasion. This is actually at the back (stern) of a canal barge here on our local Huddersfield canal. See PiPs. Sorry I cannot quite read its name tag but it does look female (and quite regal) to me :) Enjoy the day.

HFF ~ from Lladdwyn Island

This magical Island off the south eastern shores on the Isle of Anglesey has always been special. Almost hidden off the track by Newborough forest and its namesake Warren, it has three main structures; this shot shows the Tower, the others are the remains of the St Dwynwen church and the Lighthouse. A couple of impressive crosses complete the picture. I am stood here behind a row of four stone houses built before 1830 for the lighthouse keepers, pilots and lifeboat men. It was closed in 1943 and the lighthouse went out in the 1970’s. Best full screen Have a good weekend.

Packhorse Bridge, Goyt Valley

11 Mar 2025 12 10 35
Having walked from the carpark, high on the background hill we come to this bridge that takes walkers on an alternative walk onto the moors. This bridge has recently been renovated after damage by floods a year or two back and I believe it was the Royal Engineers that did the repair job. Just another mile or so down the river from here we get to our destination: the Erwood Reservoir See PiP for bigger view of the valley here. Best full screen.

HWW ~ Protected wall

A magnificent Magnolia tree frames this castle wall. Perhaps they offer protection to each other here. The blue sky adds perfectly to the back-drop. Nice full screen Enjoy the day.

Snowdonia from Llanddwyn Bay

12 Apr 2025 14 15 63
Llanddwyn Bay might not be familiar to you but it is in fact the vast sandy bay at Newborough forest, Anglesey, Wales. 25+ years since we were last here and we had hoped for better weather today, however the lighting brings out the clouds and the sand gives us a bit of colour. Enjoy full screen.

HFF ~ Wallfahrtsbasilika Sieben Schmerzen Mariae

17 Oct 2024 25 41 96
A high view for us today as we visit this church. “No visit to Linz should be without a visit to The Pöstlingberg pilgrimage basilica that stands high above the roofs of Linz, on the popular Pöstlingberg. Its twin towers seem to be omnipresent. The Pöstlingberg Church, completed in 1748 with its extraordinary location makes the landmark Pöstlingberg Church a popular wedding church.” www.donauregion.at/en/oesterreich-poi/detail/401745/poestlingberg-church.html See PiPs for alternative views Best full screen Have a good weekend.

Lyme house banister

10 Mar 2025 15 9 57
The main stairway of this majestic house has an impressive wooden banister and balcony, a common sight is such houses in those Edwardian days. The walls here are covered in oil paintings, featuring most of the former inhabitants of the house. The house now belongs to the National Trust, hence our free roam tour but there were many members of staff here to help us to get to know this house better. See the PiP for the full house. HWW ~ Down to Erwood Reservor

11 Mar 2025 17 23 72
A short distance from the Derbyshire town of Buxton runs a very lonely one-way road along the River Goyte down to the Erwood reservoir dam. Approx 3 miles (5km) long and so a six mile walk here.. Enjoy the day.

A trip on the lake

07 Apr 2025 11 15 63
A look at one of my local lakes here. We are at Hollingworth Lake, Rochdale, on a most wonderful blue sky day. An opportunistic shot with this Row and Stand up Paddleboard that along with its ripple makes a nice panoramic view as we walk the circuit around this popular place. Best full screen.

HBM ~ A Lyme bench

10 Mar 2025 21 31 70
This bench enjoys a bright warm spot here in the Lyme Park Orangery. Surrounded by south facing glass windows and exotic plants. Just the place to rest and relax with a book in all seasons. Maybe bring a soft cushion though (˚◡˚) Have a great day,

Still life on the canal.

05 Apr 2025 17 16 55
We are taking a stroll on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal here in the village of Uppermill and I cannot but notice a splendid barge with lots of hand painted knick-knacks on display. Yes, it was in fact a shop for such things. It was to move off towards our Stanedge tunnel soon into Yorkshire and so I could not linger. The barge was in fact the 'Zep Tepi' from the Shropshire Union Canal. See PiPs Best full screen.

Lyme House

10 Mar 2025 17 17 65
Any trip to Lyme Park near Stockport, Cheshire must include a look around the house and gardens here. Enjoy this wonderful view of what is in reality the back of the house. Behind me gardens and woodland walks abound and it is even populated by deer. The exterior of the hall was used as Pemberley, the seat of Mr Darcy, in the 1995 BBC adaptation of Jane Austen's novel Pride and Prejudice. This lake being the one showing the dashing Mr Darcy swimming. Enjoy full screen.
