Independence Mine

Independence Mine
These are some of the ruins of Independence Mine in Hatcher Pass near Wasilla and Palmer, Alaska. Some of the buildings have been preserved and restored but the area around the mine has been allowed to deteriorate. Hatcher Pass is a beautiful drive and we had a beautiful day when we drove the gravel road through the pass last Saturday.

Like how the ruins cascade from the mid-ground to the foreground of the scene.... The peaks in the background are awesome, too =) Great shot!

I guess it's what could be called a 'scenic ruin'. A good landscape, but someone really should do a cleanup of the 'unrestored' bits.

It's amazing to see what once was a vibrant place in complete disrepair. When we were in Alaska, we visited Kennecott Mines which was of a similar time period, but which was in the process of being restored. I'll eventually get around to posting some photos of it.
