Tide Mills sluices 27 2 2013

27 Feb 2013 4 4 35
There are several online resources which give the history of this seaside water mill. www.southdowns.gov.uk/ebb-flow-tide-mills is one of them. This was a water mill that was powered by seawater, captured as the tide rose into a lagoon behind the beach. The water then was allowed to pass out through these sluices, driving the mill wheels as it did.

A recreated version of an earlier upload which had a mistake in the lettering - zyz instead of xyz!

A recreated version of an earlier upload which had a mistake in the lettering - zyz instead of xyz! Apologies to those who visited and liked the previous version. It would have taken far too long to reproduce an identical version with just the one letter changed - in fact it would have been virtually impossible. Perhaps AI could do it but not me.

Photographed through a train window towards the Sun, this scene has reflections and glare. It is a crop of a wider view. I wanted to highlight the array of chimney pots disappearing into the distance.

Home from The Range Newhaven 12 2 2025

The Range is a large chain store selling household goods. It is about 100 yards to the right of this photo. I was waiting to photograph a train of aggregates hoppers taking shingle and sand from the harbour to a depot near London for use in the construction industry. The shopping bag has an elephant on it with the words 'Strong, reliable and hard to forget'. It was this photo that inspired me to upload the one above. www.ipernity.com/doc/siebbi/52804858/in/group/2806868

It wasn't until I wanted to caption these photos that I learnt the correct names for the two smaller towers at either end of the bridge - abutment towers.

Tower Bridge from a Thames river bus - 26 5 2015

26 May 2015 1 26
The River Buses are not designed for sight-seeing. Most of the accommodation is inside the cabin, with only a small area at the stern that is open. That area can get crowded at times when the weather is good and this snap was taken while I turned around on the bench seat at the back. This is why the picture was taken at an angle. I could have cropped it down to make a neat horizontal view, but some interesting bits would have been lost!
