Phi Ta Khon ghost figure

06 Nov 2012 6 1 23
Phi Ta Khon is well known and loved by the Thai people because of its fun and quirky elements, but despite a long-standing tradition in Northeastern Thailand, no one can say for certain when or where it started. The legend has it that “Phi Ta Khon” came from the word “Phi Tam Khon” (ghosts following people), a scene when the generous Vessantara and his wife Madri are leaving the forest for the city. To bid farewell to the couple, forest angels, ghosts and animals disguise as humans and blend in with the villagers to see them off.

Rita Deliana in the dress she got as my present to her 25th Happy Birthday. It shows her with the Kebaya bluse, the Sarong and the Selendang fabric bow in the same pattern as the Sarong. The traditional clothing for women in Bali consists of a sarong, which is a skirt made of a piece of fabric, a kebaya, a mostly transparent blouse with a top underneath, and a fine fabric scarf called a selendang, which is tied around the blouse at the top of the skirt. There are many different patterns, mostly made of cotton or silk.

Pura Dalem Surya

There are times when I'm travel around the island when right out of nowhere a pleasant surprise befalls my eyes. The Pura Dalem Surya near the village of Baha was decorated in special style. Two dead trees wrapped in a sacred cloth around. Pura is a Balinese word that means temple and a Pura Dalem is a Balinese word meaning great temple of death, since the location of Dalem Temple is mostly next to a cemetery.

Get blessed by the Pemangku priests

The mythology says that during the dark days, the god Indra led gods and goddesses to save the island from the Mayadanawa (demon of illusion). After a long and bloody fight, the gods destroyed Mayadanawa and his troops. The victory is celebrated as Galungan by Balinese Hindus. During the Ngerebong, holy statues from all temples in Kesiman and nearby subdistricts are taken to the temple. Kesiman people believe that during Ngerobong, gods and goddesses gather at the temple to show off their magical powers for humans and spirits. The gods and goddesses want to convince humans that they will protect the latter from danger and bad deeds and get rid of evil spirits from the area.

Pura Gunung Kawi inside pool

Built as a pavillon to the water deity Vishnu, with the Balinese believing that water is one of the most important forces of life. A natural spring feeds into the water features, crystal clear pools and ponds surrounded by gorgeous lush gardens. Away from the crowds, exploring travelers can wander around the tranquil temple grounds and take in the sights at their own pace.
