This is a long exposure taken during the visible aurora (Northern Lights) in Shrewsbury, Shropshire on 1st January 2025 at 1919hrs. It was an accident that I actually captured this, the aurora itself was fading quickly in the north and I decided to try a long exposure looking west. This was the result, I think it's an example of the phenomina called STEVE or to give it it's long name Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement. It was running across the sky from due west to due east and lasted for just a few minutes, a second exposure just after this one failed to show anything.

Taken with a 10x microscope objective and dark field lighting through a compound microscope, possibly a plant trichome or maybe a radiolarian, still trying to find a positive ID.

A Gynandromorph Poplar Hawk (Laothoe populi) moth. It's probably one of the rarest and most unusual insects that I will ever photograph. The left side is female, the right side male. The colour difference of each side is quite noticable the male side slightly greyer and more defined. The antennae are also different, the male side being thicker the the one on the female side.
